Gloeocapsa Magma

A lichen is a composite organism that arises from algae and/or cyanobacteria living among filaments of a fungus in a symbiotic relationship. The combined life form has properties that are very different from the properties of its component organisms. Lichens come in many colours, sizes, and forms.

Moss is different from algae, lichen or mold fungi, which are typically easier to clean and less damaging to a roof. Moss readily grows on roof shingles, especially in the spaces between shingles where the spores collect. In wet climates, moss commonly grows into a mat that can be as much as a few inches thick.

Gloeocapsa magma has gained notoriety in the Southeastern United States, but, it is also spreading throughout the Midwest. This particular type of cyanobacteria is responsible for creating black stains and streaks on roofs.[1]The bacteria accumulate over time as it feeds on moisture and calcium carbonate.[2] This accumulation begins to show the black stains as the cyanobacteria develop their dark and hard UV-protective outer coating.
